This dynamic full-cabin sedan was designed to set the sedan standard for the next century. The aggressive front end features a 6-sided grille and the whole package is wrapped up in a sophisticated, rich color we call Star Garnet Metallic.

Even from the rear, this vehicle commands attention. Elegantly tapered passenger cabin lines complement the accentuated fender flares. A high center slopes down lower at the fenders. And in the back you’ll find an under-trunk storage well, offering a convenient place to store valuables away from prying eyes. Honda adds another first with the addition of refractive rear privacy glass on part of the trunk, which helps the driver see better through the rear view.
The hood, trunk, doors and fenders are crafted with aluminum to lighten the load and increase efficiency. Front and rear subframes are made from extruded aluminum to heighten this effect. Ultra-lightweight 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels enhance aerodynamics.

A significant percentage of the seating material in the FCX Clarity FCEV is derived from plants to extend its environmental sensibility even further. The revolutionary Honda Bio-Fabric provides a CO2 reduction of 30 percent compared to conventional polyester made from petroleum products.

Silky soft to the touch, this Honda Bio-Fabric also provides outstanding elasticity—which helps to prevent sagging—as well as durability sufficient to withstand everyday wear and tear. Free and Clear:
First, the basics: the FCX Clarity is an electric vehicle. A fuel cell vehicle is powered by an electric motor running on electricity generated by a hydrogen-powered fuel cell stack. The more efficient Honda E-Drive electric motor lets you drive with peace of mind knowing that you are helping to reduce the amount of CO2 being released in our atmosphere. The compact coaxial motor is quieter and can run at higher rpm, for greater efficiency and speed.
The Vertical Flow (V Flow) fuel cell stack is one of Honda’s greatest breakthroughs in this area. The new design is smaller, allowing for better packaging efficiency. With a smaller stack, there’s room for more people. This ingenious design allows higher cell voltage stability and reduces the amount of heat generated. Gravity also helps with drainage of the excess water.
The compact, high-efficiency lithium-ion battery pack is used as a supplemental power source capturing lost energy during deceleration and braking. The new lithium-ion battery delivers improved performance and energy recovery in a more lightweight, compact package. The new battery is significantly lighter and smaller than the ultra-capacitor of the 2005 FCX, allowing it to be stowed under the rear seat. This gives the car more passenger space and a bigger trunk.

Next Best Thing to a Co-Pilot:
Honda Motor Co., Ltd introduced the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) in 2003, and we have now added it to the FCX Clarity FCEV. CMBS™ can help alert the driver to certain potential collisions and, through the use of visual and audio alerts plus an automatic tug of the seat belt, prompt the driver to take action. If a collision cannot be avoided, the system automatically retracts slack in the front seat belts and applies braking force to reduce the vehicle’s speed and help lessen the force of the collision.
Honda has also taken safety precautions with regard to the hydrogen fuel system and refueling safety.
With a chart-topping EPA-certified 61 mpg equivalent (60-mile per Kg), the FCX Clarity FCEV is capable of traveling up to 240 miles before refueling.* Of course, your mileage and range will vary based on driver use and vehicle condition.
When you do need fuel, it’s easy and safe to get it at one of the designated hydrogen refueling stations in your area. While we’re all familiar with gasoline being dispensed by the gallon, gaseous hydrogen, as used by FCX Clarity FCEV, is dispensed in kilograms. For comparison purposes, one kilogram is virtually the same as one gallon of gas. The fill-up only takes a few minutes.
Honda is also working toward a future where you may be able to fuel up right in your own garage using a Home Energy Station.
Benefits of Fuel Cells:
Why do we care about fuel cells? Because they produce electricity in a very efficient manner. And when they are used in Honda’s revolutionary new fuel cell stack, they produce enough electricity to power a real-world car.
Vehicles that use hydrogen fuel cell technology instead of gasoline are about the cleanest around because they emit only water vapor into the air. They also use hydrogen from domestic energy sources, reducing our dependence on oil. And driving fuel cell vehicles significantly reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, helping to slow the increase in greenhouse gases.
Fuel Cell Comparison:
Honda’s FCX Clarity FCEV is much more efficient than conventional gasoline-powered vehicles in converting chemical energy into power.
In gasoline-powered vehicles, fuel (gasoline) is used to heat and expand air, which then drives the engine’s pistons and crankshaft. Fuel cell vehicles, on the other hand, are much more efficient, because the conversion of fuel (hydrogen) to electricity, used to power the electric drive motor, is a more direct electrochemical process. Water is a by-product.
And since the FCX Clarity FCEV has significantly fewer components in the drive system, no pistons and no camshafts, the energy loss from these systems is eliminated.

Since the first Honda fuel cell vehicle was unveiled in 1999, dramatic changes have taken place in rapid succession. The fuel cell stack in the 1999 vehicle was very large and bulky. By developing and working to perfect our own Honda Fuel Cell (FC) stacks, Honda has made them significantly smaller and lighter. As a result, the design of the vehicle itself has also gone from tall and boxy to sleek and elegant with a roomy and comfortable cabin.
Honda has brought the fuel cell vehicle from the lab to the fleet and finally to the public. The major barrier now is building up the hydrogen supply infrastructure. We have a strong interest in this area as well and we are hard at work perfecting a Home Energy Station that may supply power to the home in addition to the family car. With these developments, Honda is paving the way for a clean and efficient hydrogen-based society of the future.
Safety was top of mind when Honda decided to put the FCX Clarity Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) on the road. Much was learned by the successful introduction of the Civic GX Natural Gas Vehicle, which has many similar fuel-system attributes. Safety research and years of real-world, on-the-road Civic GX experience has served as an excellent proving ground for Honda’s expertise with the new fuel cell systems.
Sensors are located throughout the vehicle to provide a warning in the unlikely event of a hydrogen leak. Should such a leak occur, the ventilation system is activated and an automatic system closes the main cut-off valves on the hydrogen tank or supply lines as necessary. The high-voltage lines are electrically isolated. In the event of a collision, the system controller automatically shuts off the flow of hydrogen and electric current. Repeated flood and fire testing have confirmed a very high level of safety and reliability.
Honda has taken safety precautions with regard to refueling safety. To prevent reverse flow from the tank, the hydrogen filler inlet has an integrated check valve. The fuel intake mechanism is also designed to prevent contamination by other gases or the connection of nozzles designed for hydrogen stored at incompatible pressure levels.
The FCX Clarity FCEV is not an experimental or prototype vehicle. It is a certified, assembly line-produced car that can be driven with both pride and confidence.

1. 3-Year/36,000-Mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
2. 5-Year/60,000-Mile Limited Powertrain Warranty. Ordinary maintenance or adjustments, parts subject to normal wear and replacement, and certain items are excluded. (Powertrain warranty applies to 2006 and later vehicles.)
3. Accessory Limited Warranty—All Honda Genuine Accessories are covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles when installed at the time of new vehicle purchase.
4. Replacement Parts Limited Warranty—Honda Genuine Parts are covered for 1 year. The warranty coverage for replacement parts purchased from and installed by a Honda dealer includes parts replacement and labor.
5. 5-Year/Unlimited-Mile Corrosion Limited Warranty.
